Onychomycosis - Fungal Infections of Fingernails or Toenails
The term tinea unguium is used specifically to describe invasive dermatophytic onychomycosis. Some of those toenail fungus commercials will lead you to believe that medication is the only way to treat the problem, but don't you believe it. Key issues in the treatment of onychomycosis include confirming that a fungal infection is present, and allowing sufficient time (3-6 months) after a course of treatment to allow the nail to grow out before considering retreatment. This common problem affects more than 12 million Americans. The primary fungi that cause onychomycosis are trichophyton rubrum and trichophyton mentagrophytes. And by all means, cellcet at the first sign of toenail discoloration, flaking or deterioration, begin treatment immediately and you may avoid spending the next year with your feet smelling like oregano. Continuous itraconazole (Sporanox Janssen) appears to be less efficacious for onychomycosis than continuous terbinafine and is more costly. The most common is distal subungual Onychomycosis DSO, produced by Tinea Rubrum, which initially affects the upper corner of the nail bed beneath the nail. People with onychomycosis may have a combination of these subtypes.
